"Oneonta:---Joshua Roe, one of the small group of Civil war veterans left in Oneonta, died at the home, 15 Church street there early Sunday morning. Mr. Roe, 88 years of age and an active member of the E. D. Farmer post, was one of the oldest of the surviving veterans. Death was due to the infirmities of old age, doctors stated. He was born in Jefferson, June 15, 1841, and joined Company I, First New York Engineers, attached to the 144th Regiment in 1864. He was hte last surviving of four brothers who served during the war. Following the submission of the South and dismissal of troops, Mr. Roe returned to this section and became a farmer. He followed this occupation until retirement 10 years ago. The deceased man was a son of Louisa Mudge and Nathaniel Roe. He was married twice, both wives passing away before his own demise. Two sons survive him, Nathaniel Roe of Syracuse and James Roe of Schenectady; one daughter, Mrs. Frank Waldron of Phoenix; one stepson Delbert Porter, Unadilla, and two stepdaughters, Mrs. N. B. Bresee, Laurens, and Mrs. Welcome H. Parrish, who has been caring for Mr. Roe during the last 10 years of his life, and at whose home he died.
