Gwen was born April 6, 1956, in Charleston, Mo., a daughter of the late Jimmy Smith, Rev. Deloris L. Howard and Marshall Howard. She grew up in Bloomington and graduated from Bloomington High School in 1974, where she was active in the Drama Club, the speech and debate squad, as well as the mascot for the Purple Raiders. She attended Illinois State University. In 1983, she married Irvin L. Henry and later moved to Atlanta, Ga.
While in Bloomington, Gwen was an employee of State Farm Insurance Cos. She also had worked for Verizon in Atlanta, Ga., and most recently she worked for the Georgia Aquarium. Gwen attended New Beginning Full Gospel Baptist Church, where Bishop James Morton was her pastor.
Gwen is survived by her husband, Irvin L. Henry; two daughters, Demetria N. Henry, Lawrenceville, Ga., and D'Haria (Keith) Black, Norcross, Ga.; two grandchildren, Kyara and Keith; her parents, Marshall and Deloris Howard, Bloomington; stepmother, Ruby Smith, Chicago; four brothers, Danny Howard, Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo.; David and Marshall E. Howard, both of Bloomington; and Jarod Smith, Chicago; five sisters, Ruby Perez and Barbara Burch, both of Bloomington; Marilyn Tarver, Gridley; and Charlotte Rollins and Kendra Smith, both of Chicago.
Gwen was preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandparents and one brother.
