JONESBORO — Velma L. Summers, 86, died Friday, April 25, 2008, at St. Bernards Medical Center.

She was born Dec. 31, 1921, at Jonesboro to the late Oscar and Esther Schultz. Mrs. Summers was an active member of Walnut Street Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Praise Sunday school class. She worked and retired as a sales clerk for J.C. Penney for 35 years. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend who will be greatly missed. She loved gardening and flowers.

Survivors include a daughter and husband, Judy and Bobby Ozbirn of Jonesboro; a son, David Summers of Jonesboro; two grandsons and their wives, Michael Brandon and Renee Summers and Daniel Aaron and Jordan Summers, all of Jonesboro; five great-grandchildren, Abby Renee Summers, Ally Faith Summers, Brooke Makayla Summers, Wade Jackson Summers and Daniel Carter Summers; one stepgranddaughter, Marjorie Dianne Faulkner of Memphis; a cousin and his wife, Ray and Betty Erwin of Jonesboro; and several nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie A. Summers; and a brother, Clyde Willis Schultz.

A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday in Gregg Funeral Home Chapel at Jonesboro with the Rev. Glen Putman officiating. Burial will follow in Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be tonight from 5-7 in Gregg Funeral Home at Jonesboro.

Honored to serve as pallbearers are Ray Erwin, Jerry Parker, Mark Turner, Tommy Summers, Johnny French and Terrance Riley, and to serve as honorary, the Praise Sunday school class.

Lasting memorials may be sent to Walnut Street Baptist Church, 1910 Scenic Drive, Jonesboro 72401.
