Ruth Harlan Hoaglin, 91, of Hillsboro, died Wednesday, October 10, 2001, at her home.

Born August 30, 1910, in Hillsboro, she was the daughter of Walter A. and Lily Tade Harlan. She married Eldridge Hoaglin on March 20, 1934. He died July 9, 1988.

Mrs. Hoaglin graduated from Hillsboro High School, attended Parsons College in Fairfield and graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College. She obtained graduate hours at Florida Southern University in Lakeland. She and her husband lived in Hillsboro, Mt. Pleasant and Fairfield and moved to Florida in 1963. She spent 15 years teaching school in Iowa and ten years in Bartow, Florida.

She served as a member of Hillsboro School Board, did extension work from the University of Iowa and taught Sunday School for many years at the Hillsboro Baptist Church, where she was a member. She also was a member of the Alpha Club and Order of the Eastern Star.

She spent all her winters in Florida, beginning in 1963. She loved and lived in Iowa during the summer and fall. She was an avid reader, enjoyed watching baseball and basket ball and loved visiting about a fast range of subjects. She and her husband traveled extensively throughout the United States, visiting 46 of the 50 States.

Survivors include one son, Jon Hoaglin of Babson Park, FL; three daughters, Ruth Ann Scholl of Sylva, N.C., Mary Sue Hoaglin of Fairfield and Marsha Coiffi of North Palm Beach, FL.; nine grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren; her sister, Lola Sanisbury of Hillsboro; nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Leslie, Lawrence, and Howard Harlan; one Granddaughter, Janey Ruth Benedict, and one great-granddaughter, Molly McMahon.

The funeral for Mrs. Hoaglin was Saturday, October 13, 2001 at Hillsboro Baptist Church, Revs. Ed Newman and Mark Caston officiated. Burial was in Hillsboro Cemetery.
Memorials have been established for her church and the Christian Church, Hillsboro Library and Hillsboro Cemetery.
