ELK RAPIDS — Bernard M. "Ben" Ranter, 83, of Elk Rapids, died Thursday, Feb. 26, in Traverse City.
Formerly of Dearborn, he had resided in Elk Rapids for the past 14 years. Ben was a member of the Dearborn Police Department for over 25 years, retiring in 1961. He also worked for Allstate Insurance Company for 17 years. Ben was very proud that he had worked two jobs during the depression.
An avid saxophone and clarinet player, Ben played with the Russ Armstrong Colombians and the Roston Clark Orchestra for many years. He was a 50 year member of the Detroit Federation of Musicians, a 12 year member of the Dearborn Kiwanis, a member of St. Pauls Episcopal Church in Elk Rapids and a member of the Elk Rapids Golf League.
Born in Detroit on Nov. 23, 1914, he was the son of Frank and Marcella (Paholek) Panter. In August of 1938, in Detroit, he was united in marriage to the former Helen Davenport, who survives.
Also surviving are his two sons, Robert (JoAnn) Panter of Traverse City, Richard (Glynda) Panter of Columbia, S.C.; one daughter, Margaret (William) Bushnell of Barrington, III.; his brother, Henry (Irene) Panter of Dearborn; his sister, Margaret (Felix) Nastold of Grosse He; five grandchildren; William (Marilee) Bushnell Jr., Jenifer Panter, Cindy (Ted) Panter-Lardie, Kimberly (Brad) Bush-nell-Welch and Juliet Christian-Smith; his great-grandson, Samuel C. Welch; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Saturday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Funer¬al services will be at 2 p.m. on Sun¬day, March 1, at St. Pauls Episcopal Church in Elk Rapids. The Rev. Father Fred Myers officiating. Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Elk Rapids.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Pauls Episcopal Church or to Munson Hospice.
