Elk Rapids Progress of 6-3-1897
Maria A. Horton was born at Springfield, Ohio, Dec. 3d, 1839, and died at her home in Elk Rapids, May 17, 1897.
in the summer of 1856, her father, with his family left Toledo, Ohio, in a small schooner and came to Pine Lake, in what is now Charlevoix county. They were over two months making the trip, their vessel being so small that they could be out on the lakes only in fair weather.
in the fall of 1859 Miss Horton came to Elk Rapids with her brother-in-law, James R. Dean and family, and the winter of 1859-60 she taught the first school ever taught in the Elk Lake district.
June 1, 1861, she married J. J. McLaughlin and they settled on their farm two and a half miles south of the village of Elk Rapids, where, amid the privations of a new country, they built up a home.
in August, 1864, her husband enlisted and went to the front, leaving her with two children, the youngest only four months old on the farm. The hardships she endured while he was away broke down her health, and she never enjoyed good health after. in 1892 her physician advised a change, and the family moved to their home in the village.
She was converted and joined the M.E. church when thirteen years old and lived out her profession in her every day life, naturally of a retiring disposition she shrank from public duties and loved the retirement of her home.
On Christmas day, 1892, she suffered a fall that injured her back and resulted in a diseased kidney, which caused her death. Although a great sufferer, she was never known to murmur or complain. She had been for a number of years a member Elk Rapids Lodge, No. 181, Daughters of Rebekah, I.O.O.F., and the order was well represented at her funeral, which took place Wednesday afternoon, May 19th, from her late home.
