He prospected in the Northwest a few years, finally settling in Duluth, Minnesota, where he engaged in the mercantile business for thirteen years. Later he bought a tract of land in Saskatchewan. After a few years in this province, he sold out and came to the United States, arriving in Michigan in 1908.

On February 23, 1909 he was united in marriage to Effie E. Goodman at Sault Ste Marie, Ontario. In March they came to their present home in South Milton, which is located on the east side of Elk Lake. The lived there until 1914 when they moved to Detroit where Mr. Goodman opened another grocery store. Here they remained for four years, when coming back, Mr. Goodman opened a grocery store in 1918 continuing it until selling out to the present owner, Carl Johnson.

Mr. and Mrs. Goodman turned their attention again to their property on beautiful Elk Lake. They decided to develop it into a summer resort, which they did and it is now "Birchenwald" resort which they have successfully operated for a number of years.

Mr. Goodman was a devout and active member of the Methodist Church from early manhood, a good citizen and neighbor and a valued member of the Masonic order for over forty years.
