Verna M. Fischer, 97, of Eureka died April 5, 2008 at Avera Eureka Health Care Center. Verna Minnie Schamber, daughter of Julius and Minnie (Blank) Schamber was born June 19, 1910 at Eureka, SD. She attended Eureka Public Schools graduating with the class of 1928. She then attended The Eureka Lutheran Academy, The University of Minnesota and Augustana College. She taught elementary school for 23 years, nine of those years were with the Eureka school system. She was united in marriage to David C. Fischer in 1939 at Zion Lutheran Church at Eureka. He died May 31, 1987. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and a charter member of the Eureka Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. She was a former member and officer of the Zion Mary Martha Circle, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and the Eureka Needle Hour Club. Survivors include one son, D. Thomas Fischer of Eureka and one sister, June Chubski of Carnation, Washington. Her parents, husband, one sister and four brothers preceded her in death. Graveside service for Verna M. Fischer, 97, of Eureka will be 10:00 am, Wednesday, April 9, 2008 at Zion Lutheran Cemetery at Eureka. The Rev. Linda Wahlstrom will officiate. Visitation will be Tuesday from 1-6pm at the funeral home.
