Ivan I. Bender was born near Kalona, the son of Ira D. and Lena Miller Bender. He grew up in the community and served in Civilian Public Service Camp #64 in Montana from 5-18-1943 to 2-17-1946 as a conscientious objector.
Ivan and Mattie Miller were married on December 16, 1941. Ivan was a chef and a farmer. He had worked in kitchens at the Airliner in Iowa City and the Kalona Sales Barn. He also served the community by sharpening scissors and knives for customers.
Ivan is survived by seven children and spouses: Marvin and Emma Bender of Atmore, AL, Rufus Bender of Tiffin, Esther Bell, Ezra Bender, Serena and Ed Zahradnek all of Kalona, Cecil and Karen Bender of Macon, MO, and Morris Bender of Kalona, 27 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren and one great great grandson. Also surviving are one brother, Lloyd and wife Barbara of Kalona and one sister, Ruby and husband Owen Miller of Oxford, and one brother-in-law Paul Shetler of Greenwood, DE.
Preceding Ivan in death were his parents, his wife, Mattie (11/17/2003 ), a grandson, Paul David Bender, two sisters, Dorothy Shetler and Mary Bender and a brother Monroe Bender.
A memorial fund for Iowa City Hospice or Pleasantview Home has been established.
