Dr. Carroll (Wally) passed March 23, 2016 peacefully at Cottage Hospital. He was born in Pittsburg, PA, November 6, 1933 to Elmer and Pauline Carroll, one of two boys, Thomas Jackson Carroll (Jack) and Wally. He attended High School at Abington PA, Wesleyan College in Middleton Connecticut, received a Fulbright Scholarship to Hamburg Germany in 1955 where he met his Argentine wife of 60 years, Maria Luisa. Wally attended Medical School at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He completed his internship and residency at Los Angeles County General Hospital in Pathology. He was then drafted into the US Army where he served as a Captain. He ran the whole lab and blood bank at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, for two years.

He moved with his wife and four children to Santa Barbara where he worked at Cottage Hospital from 1968 until his retirement. He seemed to recognize every slide that can be put under a microscope, assisting many with his conclusions. He ran the School of Medical Technology, the Blood Bank, and was also in charge of Infectious Disease Control at Cottage Hospital during his career.

For many years he and his cousin, R. David Jackson, worked on an invention which would revolutionize assessment of blood coagulation. He excelled in sports because of his determination. He was a wrestling champion in college, and ran 16 marathons, including Boston twice. He started jogging in his army boots at age 33.

He provided very generously for his family and was always concerned about them. He always took time from his schedule to attend his children's activities be they Indian Guides, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, sporting activities such as wrestling, soccer, track, cross country and later in life distance running, and proudly presented his daughter as a debutante.

Ultimately, he was kind, he was humble, and he loved us. There is nothing that makes him more important to us than that.

He is survived by Maria Luisa Carroll, his wife of sixty years, his children Tomas, Marina, Dorion and Brian Carroll; grandchildren, Linzey, Dustin, Cameron, Marisa, Juan Carlos, August, Quinn, Liam, Natalie and Madeleine; great grandchildren, Kaley, Raelyn and Seth; and his brother, Jack and cousin Dave.
