AQUINO, ANTHONY S. 80, of Cincinnati, OH, died peacefully March 12, 2011, after a short illness.


An award-winning journalist, he was born in Providence, the son of the late Samuel and Mary Grace (Ferraiuolo) Aquino. Before working as senior writer/editor of alumni publications at Xavier University (OH), for 7 years, he was a reporter/copy editor for The Call (Woonsocket), Providence Journal-Bulletin, Worcester (MA) Telegram & Evening Gazette, and Pawtuxet Valley Daily Times. At The Call, he won a first-place, general news award, from the New England Associated Press Managing Editors Association. As a freelance writer, he had many op-ed pieces published in the Cincinnati Enquirer, Cincinnati Post, and Washington Post. He began his career as an editorial assistant, at Reporter Magazine, in New York. He was also creative director at Goldsmith Tregar, Providence.

A Korean War veteran, he served in the U.S. Army for 3 years and received the Korean Service Medal with 3 Bronze Battle Stars. He was in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve for 2 years.

He attended St. Michael's Parish School, LaSalle Academy, and the University of Rhode Island. Survivors include sons Peter D. Aquino, Coventry, John G. (Nadja Wackerling) Aquino, Chicago, and Neil A. (Laura Goldberg) Aquino, Houston; grandchildren Melita and Thomas Aquino, Chicago; special friend Carol (Huested) Aquino, Cincinnati; sister Mary Dacey, Coventry; brother Thomas Aquino, Providence; several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters Anna Minicucci and Annette Andreoli, RI. A memorial service will be held this summer in RI.
