Karen Sue Pfuetze, 87, nurse, died February 4, 2024. She was born July 13, 1936 in Hutchinson, KS, to Harold Reuben Barnes and Clara Dilshaver Barnes.

"Sue" grew up in Hutchinson and graduated from The University of Kansas with a B.S. in Nursing In 1959. Soon after, she married David Pfuetze of Manhattan, KS, and had one daughter, Elizabeth. Sue was a loyal wife, devoted mom, and talented homemaker. In 1979, Sue began a nearly 30 year career in nursing, working at Rex Hospital and Boylan Internal Medicine, as well as teaching CPR for the Red Cross, all in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Sue had a gentle, but driven spirit, defeating three kinds of cancer in her lifetime. Sue had many interests beyond medicine; at the age of 68, Sue took up running marathons; many wonderful family vacations included a marathon on the itinerary. Sue also had a great love of gardening, a passion she shared with her father; she also loved the North Carolina Tarheels and was a great jigsaw puzzle enthusiast. Sue's wisdom and compassion were a blessing to all who considered her family and friend. She will be missed beyond measure.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Richard Barnes, Kansas City; and sister, Barbara White, Cherokee, OK.

She is survived by her brother-in-law, John White; sister-in-law, Donna Nelson; daughter, Elizabeth Glowik & husband Jack; and two granddaughters.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, February 17, 2024 at Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, 300 E. 30th Ave. Hutchinson, KS. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the JC Raulston Arboretum at North Carolina State University and can be sent in care of Hutchinson Funeral Chapel.
