Abraham 1st married Mary Worely in Ohio County, Virginia (now West Virginia) June 7, 1792. They had three children: Mary Van Matre; Ann Van Matre and Isaac Van Matre.  Mary left him and he most likely obtained a divorce as he 2nd married Sarah Bell, daughter of J Captain Jacob Bell, about 1802. Abraham and Sarah had one son: Joseph Bell Van Matre.

Abraham moved to northern Kentucky sometime in the late 1700s, about the same time as his brother Morgan. Both Morgan and Abraham have been located in Harrison county, Kentucky: Morgan's fourth child, James, was born there in 1795 and the Kentucky Gazette for the period 1787-1800 shows the following information on March 17, 1797:

"Abraham Van Matre, Harrison County, says the wife, Mary, has left him and he won't pay her bills anymore".

. . . his will mentions his first wife, Mary and the following three children from that marriage: Mary, Ann and Isaac who probably were born in the 1790s. Harrison County is near Highland county, Ohio, and I believe that Abraham moved there in the early 1800s.
