John Allen Barter, 90, residing at Harbor Point Assisted Living of Centerville, MA, died after a period of declining health on February 2, 2024 surrounded by his clergy and his two dearest friends. John was born in Boston, MA on August 26, 1933. He was the son of the late Owen and Virginia Barter. John was also predeceased by his brother David Barter and his sister Bettie-Anne Olsen. John was a devoted husband of 50 years to the late Beverly Barter. John attended St. Francis Xavier Church in Hyannis.

After his graduation from Beverly High School in 1951, John enlisted in the US Navy. He was a veteran of the Korean War. He served four years, first on the destroyer USS Stephen Potter and then on the aircraft carrier USS Coral Sea. After his naval service, John continued his education at Otero Jr. College in Colorado. Later, he earned his BA at Wichita State University in Kansas. He received his Master of Education from Bridgewater State College in 1971.

John's first teaching position was in Connecticut. The following year, he and Beverly moved to Hyannis. For the next three decades, John worked for the Falmouth, MA Public School System. He began as a teacher and later advanced to the position of Assistant Principal at Lawrence Jr. High School. Before his retirement, he worked as Director of Support Services. For many summers, John was an invaluable assistant who helped to organize and set up the conference of the Executive Institute of MA Association of School Superintendents in Falmouth and Mashpee.

John was at his most content when he was able to do something to help someone else. He never

expected anything in return. If something needed to be fixed, tended to, or resolved, John was the "go-to guy". John was an accomplished sailor who loved to be on his sailboat with family and friends. He enjoyed tending to the beautiful roses that trailed around the split rail fence surrounding their home. His neighbors affectionately called him "The Mayor" of the neighborhood. John was a "Mr. fix-it" when it came to mechanical car repairs. He gladly assisted many people who needed a flat tire change or a battery jump start.

John is survived by several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Many thanks go to the staff at Harbor Point of Centerville for the wonderful care that John received. Some of his daily caregivers cheerfully addressed him as "Mr. Handsome" and "Boss Man", which always made him smile. John was constantly grateful to his long-time primary caregivers and dear friends Gail and Susan who were at his side when he passed away. John's kind heart, gentle spirit, generosity, patience, easy going manner and his sense of humor will be greatly missed.

John's funeral service will be held at Chapman Funeral Home 3778 Falmouth Rd. (Rte. 28) Marstons

Mills, MA on Thursday, February 15th at 11:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Mosswood Cemetery, Putnam
