Alfred "Fred" Goodrich Ashmore was born June 9th, 1933, to Orville and Eva Lois (Koogle) Ashmore, and passed away peacefully on February 3rd, 2024.
Fred graduated from McAlester High School in 1951 as an Honorable Mention All-American Football Player and a state Track Champion in the 440, posting the 6th fastest time in the Nation. He was later inducted into his High School Hall of Fame.
Fred was commissioned to West Point for one year of lettering in Football, before transferring to Oklahoma A&M (OSU) to run track. Dred graduated from Oklahoma A&M in June of 1956, as a member of the Championship and World Record Holding Track team and was inducted into the Oklahoma State Cowboys' Track and Field Hall of Honor. Fred was pictured in Sports Illustrated while running in the Los Angeles Coliseum.
After college, Fred began his career with the Corps of Engineers where he retired after more than 35 years. He was assigned to major projects such as the building of Eufaula Dam, Foreign Air Strips, Broken Bow Dam, Wister Lake, John Redmond, Lake Tenkiller, and Fort Gibson Lake.
Fred served our country for more than 25 years as a member of the National Guard, retiring at the rank of Captain.
He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Jean, son Scott, brother Tony, and son-in-law Mike. He is survived by his brother Jon, daughters Terri and Vicki (Augie), his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
A private service will be held at a later date.
