Ms. Martha Barbee Johnson, age 82, a resident of New Bern, died at her home on January 9, 2024. Visitation will be held for the family to receive friends at 1:00pm and funeral services will be held at 2:00pm on January 16, 2024 at First Baptist Church, 239 Middle Street New Bern, with Dr. Richard Seagle officiating. Interment will be at Greenleaf Memorial Park in Trent Woods.
Ms. Johnson was born August 6, 1941 in Morrisville, N.C., daughter of the late Wallace Risher Barbee and Marjorie Katherine Edwards Barbee. She graduated with an Associate of Arts degree from Campbell College and was a homemaker and secretary. On December 8, 1962, she married Larry Phillip Johnson who preceded her in death on September 17, 2011. Her brother, Wallace Eugene Barbee, preceded her in death on September 19, 2008.
Ms. Johnson was a member of First Baptist Church and participated in bible studies at Broad Street Christian Church. She assisted those in need by volunteering as a Gray Lady at CarolinaEast Medical Center. Ms. Johnson loved going to the beach, shopping with her closest friends each Friday, reading, and watching classic films. She was fond of gardening and taking care of her house plants, and was a proud recipient of Yard of the Month multiple times.
Ms. Johnson is survived by her children, Jeffrey Christian Johnson and wife Tanya of Chesterfield, VA., Paige Johnson Muse and husband Kenneth Everette Muse of New Bern, three grandchildren, Kayla Danielle Johnson, Kenneth Everette Muse, Jr., and Payton Elizabeth Muse. Her grandchildren affectionately referred to her as Mot-Mot, GrandMaMa, and MaMaMa. Ms. Johnson delighted in time spent with family creating cherished memories. Her cheerful spirit will be missed and she will always hold a special place in our hearts.
