There were several Cincinnati newspaper articles about a Sherwood Coates, sometimes spelled Coats, between 1890 and 1904. Ultimately it seems he was imprisoned briefly in 1898 for brawling with the saloonist Valentine Bettner, during which Mr. Bettner had a bat and Mr. Coates had a knife. At some point, possibly as a result of a blow to the head, he became epileptic and was sent to the Ohio Hospital for Epileptics in Gallipolis, Gallia County, Ohio, on March 25, 1908 as a patient. He and his wife divorced prior to 1910. Mr. Coates died of pulmonary tuberculosis at that facility 15 years, 3 months and 11 days after being placed there.
