"Murray" contracted measels at age 3 and was deaf for the rest of his life. At age 18, in 1864, he went to "Michigan Asylum for the Deaf, Dumb, and Blind" in Bangor, Michigan and remained there for 7 years, until 1871, where he met his wife Celia, who was also deaf.
