During Private French's enlistment, the 26th Kentucky Infantry participated in the Campaign of the Carolinas (March 1-April 26, 1865). The unit was at the Bennett Place (near Raleigh, North Carolina) when Confederate General Joseph Johnston and Union General William Sherman negotiated the largest surrender of Confederate soldiers during the Civil War (April 26, 1865).
French was a member of Post 52 (Blair) of the Grand Army of the Republic. He died on September 2, 1902.
