It is difficult to know exactly who Annie's biological mother was. On the 1861 Census of Canada (which includes Annie), Henry and Elizabeth report the year of their marriage as 1857. Henry's obituary reports that he came to Canada in 1855 and married Elizabeth that same year. Annie was born in 1854, before both dates. Did Annie's mother die after her birth? Either way, it is clear Elizabeth raised her from a very early age and Elizabeth is listed as her mother on her Indiana death certificate.

Obituary from The Herald-Press, Saint Joseph, Michigan, Thursday, December 4, 1924, Page 5:

Funeral services for Mrs. Anna Lein, 70, former resident of Washington avenue, who died Wednesday at one o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Olivia Fritz of South Bend, Ind., will be held Saturday afternoon at one o'clock from the home of another daughter, Mrs. Carl Adler of 319 Lake street, St. Joseph, and at two o'clock from the German Evangelical church of Baroda. Burial will be in the Baroda cemetery.

Mrs. Lein had been ill for three weeks.

Born in Germany, April 12, 1854, Mrs. Lein came to this country when she was four years old. [She came to Canada when she was four.]

Surviving are four daughters and three sons, Mrs. Adler, Mrs. Fritz, Mrs. John Lausman of Stevensville, Mrs. William Gross of South Bend, Angus Lein of St. Joseph, Alfred and Harry Lein of Stevensville; six grandchildren, two great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Jacob Keller, Kitchener, Canada, and Mrs. Semcoe Washburn of St. Jacob's, Ont.

Gravesite Details

Annie's husband's grave is marked with a stone that includes space for her information, but this was not completed. Per her obituaries, she is buried in Baroda, presumably beside Henry.
