Howard John Ahrens was born on 23 January 1920, in Beaver Falls Township, Renville County, Minnesota, to William and Lena Schmidt Ahrens. He graduated from Redwood Falls High School and then served in the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Alaska, France; and, in Germany during World War II.

After Howard was discharged from the Army, he spent most of his life doing construction and carpentry work.

On 28 June 1948, Howard married Lucille Kramer and they resided in Redwood Falls until 1974, when they moved to Brainard. In 1989, Howard moved to Kasota.

Howard John Ahrens, of Kasota, died at the age of 75, on Saturday, 24 June 1995, at the Jordan Nursing Home in Scott County, Minnesota. He had been a resident for three days.

Howard was survived by his former wife, Lucille, of Fairbanks, Alaska; son Greg (Theresa) of Fairbanks; daughters, Colleen, Valerie (Mitch) Benedetti, and Paula (Scott) Cucha, all of Fairbanks, Cindy (Dave) Slip of Fort Lewis, Washington, and Joan (Dave) Drexler of Plymouth; seven grandchildren; sister, Loretta (Lyle) Emerson of Kasota; and brothers, Floyd (Becky) of Gibbon, and William (Sally) and Luverne, all of Franklin. He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers.

Graveside services were held on 28 June 1995, at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota.
