Maryland DAR regent Martha Dietrich, a retired federal employee and a former head of the Maryland Organization of the Daughters of the American Revolution, died Tuesday at her home in College Park of complications of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's disease. She was 78.

Mrs. Dietrich retired in 1970 as a civilian personnel officer for the Navy. She started her career when she moved to Washington from her native Indiana in 1937 to work for the civil service commissioner. The former Martha Shultz was Maryland regent of the DAR from 1979 until 1982.

Services for Mrs. Dietrich were set for 10 a.m. today at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in College Park.

Her husband, E. Donald Dietrich, died in 1986. She is survived by two daughters, Florence Harris of University Park and Jean Litterst of Louisville, Ky.; a son, Charles D. Dietrich of Rockville; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
