Professional Basketball Referee. He was a National Basketball Association referee and one of the NBA's most influential leaders for over 31 years. From 1967 to 1994, he officiated over 2,000 games, including 1,798 regular season NBA games, 269 NBA Playoff games, 41 NBA Finals games and five NBA All-Star games. In addition to refereeing, Garretson spent 17 years, as the NBA league's chief of officiating staff, formulating practices and methods such as the three man referee staff used today for all NBA games. He was also instrumental in creating and heading the NBA referees' first union, the National Association of Basketball Referees (NBRA). After retiring as an active referee, he continued the role as NBA officiating senior supervisor, 1994 to 1998. His son Ron Garretson is also a referee in the NBA and wears his father's number 10 in his honor.
