Thorleif (von) Paus was raised in Christiania (Oslo) and graduated from the military academy, becoming a first lieutenant. He was the Swedish-Norwegian consular secretary in Vienna from 1902, later the Norwegian vice-consul and acting consul-general in Vienna. He returned to Norway at the end of the First World War and was a factory owner and businessman in Norway. In 1936 he moved to Sweden where he acquired Kvesarum Castle. Around 1964 he moved from Sweden to Denmark, where he died in Copenhagen in 1976.

He was married in his first marriage to Ella Stein (1883–1971), of Austrian-Jewish origin, and in his third marriage to the Dowager Countess Ella Moltke née Glückstadt (1899–1986), of Danish-Jewish origin. He was the father of Helvig Paus and Major-General Ole Otto Paus.

His father was a first cousin of Henrik Ibsen. Thorleif was thus a second cousin of Prime Minister Sigurd Ibsen.
