From census and other records he appears to be the son of James Mumford (1811-1846) and Ann Henderson (1817-1895}. He appears on the 1900 census in the household of his brother Joseph Mumford (1834-1913) and is listed as widowed. He does not seem to be on the 1910 census and has probably died before 1910.

He was a Confederate soldier. He enlisted at a camp near Kinston, Lenoir County, NC on Apr 21, 1862. His rank was Private, Co. A, 35th Regiment, NC Infantry. He was promoted to Corporal March 15, 1864. He was captured by the yankees Apr 1, 1865 at Five Forks, VA and sent to a union prison at Point Lookout, MD. On June 29, 1865 he took an Oath of Allegiance to the United States and released to return to home in Onslow County, NC. REAMEY WINN #47510776

New Information: William Penn Mumford was reported to be buried in the Mumford Family Cemetery near Catherine Lake, Onslow County, NC with his wife Sarah and their son Thaddeus. Documentation from the 1980s show that his brother Joseph (1834-1913) is actually buried here; not William. So I have changed William's burial place to unknown. REAMEY WINN #47510776
