Delores passed away surrounded by family in her home on Friday, October 13, 2023.

Dee was born July 23, 1930, in her grandmother's farmhouse in rural Pierce, Nebraska to her parents Roy and Sadie (Pittack) Van Doren. Dee graduated from Norfolk High School in the spring of 1948 and on June 26, 1949, Dee was united in marriage to Robert "Bob" Sewell in Norfolk. Dee and Bob had five children: Dean, Marsha, Lana, Mark, and Scott. In addition to parenting, Dee was employed at the Norfolk Regional Center and Dale Electronics.

Through her well-lived Christian life, Dee lived in O'Neill, Nebraska, Thornton, Colorado and Norfolk, Nebraska. She was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School, was a member of Ladies Aid, and Mary Martha. Daily devotions and her prayer lists were always by her chair to help her pray for her friends and family.

Dee was active with the local Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and held several offices over the years. Dee loved her history and was the family genealogist for decades. She researched in libraries, visited graveyards, and contacted people all over the country to put her family's history together in several hand-typed books. Dee was responsible for not only her immediate family history but extended family, too. The Pittack family reunion was an annual event and Dee was in charge of updating everyone on births, deaths, marriages, confirmations, graduations- the list went on.

Dee loved to sew, quilt and crochet. She helped make and donate over 300 quilts to the Orphan Grain Train, donated quilts to several Norfolk Lutheran High raffles, and made every one of her grandchildren a crocheted blanket with individual themes as they were growing up.

Gardening was another valued way of life for Dee. Starting at the family farm and then continuing a scaled-down version when she moved to town. The grandchildren would love to play in Grandma's Grocery store in her basement, racks full of jelly jars, vegetables, pickles, and beets. There were overstocked Corn Flakes and gallons of vanilla ice cream. Large family meals were a breeze for Dee, and she was always ready for company with meatloaf and an apple cake of some sort.

Family was everything to Dee. That was evident everywhere you looked. Dee's famous refrigerator is covered in school pictures of the 11 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. For two summers Dee and Bob hosted "Apple Orchard Camp", where all the grandchildren were dropped off with grandma and grandpa for a week. The camp involved waking early, raising the flag, daily devotions, making meals, the girls learned to cook and sew, the boys learned to shoot guns and care for the farm, evening chores, a few walks down to the creek to wade, and every day ended in ice cream and bedtime prayers.

Once Dee became a widow, she wasted no time on who to take care of next. Dee and her canine travel companion, Dottie, hit the road and visited many of the grandkids in their homes for weeks at a time. Dee traveled to Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Texas, Colorado, California, and all over Nebraska to spend time with her family. In later years Dee joined the digital world and started to use her "critter" (iPad) to use social media to keep up with the family.

Dee will be welcomed with open arms in heaven by her loving husband of 58 years, Robert Sewell; sons, Mark Sewell and Scott Sewell; brother, Melvin; and her parents, Sadie and Roy Van Doren.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Dean (Pamela) Sewell of Lincoln, Nebraska, Marsha (Lynn) Stewart of Norfolk, Nebraska, and Lana (Don) Zimmerman of Temple, Texas; daughter-in-law, Kathy Sewell-Jensen of Pewaukee, Wisconsin; brother, Everett (Janet) Van Doren of Tennessee; sister-in-law, Edra Van Doren of Utah; 11 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many extended family and friends.
