Watson, a partner in the commission house of Macondray & Company, went to California in 1849 determined to make his fortune and return home to New Bedford, Massachusetts.
In 1852 Watson returned East a rich man, drawing $150,000 out of Macondray & Company and leaving $60,000 behind to be managed for him.
Shortly after his return, he invested in railroads beginning with Hannibal and St. Joseph Railroad.
By 1872 he was listed as a director of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy RR along with John Wood Brooks and John M Forbes---all three would have homes in Milton.
