Joseph Anthony Davis went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, January 5. Funeral services are planned for Monday, January 15, 10:00 a.m., at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Stonewall, Tx., with visitation for his friends and family beginning at 9:00 a.m.
Born on February 14, 1942 in San Antonio to Robert and Anne Davis, Joe's formative years were mostly in the hills of Kendall County surrounding the city of Boerne.
As a very active high school athlete and band member, Joe is found on the same pages of the school yearbook with his future bride, Vicki Lynne Craze. Joe and Vicki married on November 17th, 1962 in Denton, Texas. They lived and worked in several communities in the Dallas vicinity where they started their young family. Joe and Vicki served as wonderful role models of love and faithfulness to their three children: Jeanine, Yvonne, and Michael.
Joe was a servant leader–everything he did he did for others or to lead others. Joe's service as an officer with the Dallas Police Department recounts many opportunities he stepped in to assist others whose lives were in crisis.
Returning to his hometown of Boerne in 1968, Joe purchased Reissig's Grocery store on South Main Street where he and his brother had worked during their high school years. As the proprietor of "Davis Food Fare," a community grocery and gathering place, Joe opened his store to those barely making it week to week. In many cases, he wrote "paid in full" for those customers he knew could not cover their account.
Expanding on an opportunity to serve the community, Joe's entrepreneurship availed furniture and appliances to the small hamlet of Boerne…and again, readily signed off "paid in full" to residents who needed his services but did not have the resources to pay. This community service expanded in home repair and home building.
Joe's energy and vigor were seen in work and play. Joe enjoyed life, but his enjoyment came from including others in recreational activities they would not normally do. Many Boerne kids who worked for him enjoyed a day or weekend at Medina Lake, or a flight in his small airplane.
As adventurers, Joe and Vicki purchased a small tract of land on Mainstreet, Cripple Creek, Colorado. There Joe designed and built a curio and dessert bar, where Vicki's talent in crafts and cooking could be sold. Remnants of the walls are woven into a vibrant casino that still stand today–remnants that serve as a reminder of the past…and of Joe and Vicki's craftsmanship.
Joe returned to the hill country, building several houses in the Luckenbach area and giving life to a long-standing dream of having an orchard. Weekly, Joe and Vicki would travel around the hill country peddling the peaches harvested from their orchards.
Joe always stepped up for community, whether as a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Boerne, to his community service in Cripple Creek,Colorado, and St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Stonewall, Joe was always contributing.
Joe and Vicki raised three outstanding children, role-modeling to them faith, family, and fellowship.
After the loss of his wife, Vicki, Joe's subsiding years were nestled in the home that hosted annual family gatherings.
