Sarah was apparently prone to uncontrolled outbursts of temper, but her husband seems to have doted on her. For her 80th birthday he gave her a loving poem of his own composition. Their daughter Catherine described Sir George Cayley as Sarah's "slave through life."
Sarah had intellectual interests. In 1841 she bought a copy of a 1669 edition of Emblemata Ethico Politica by Jacobus Bornitius. This work was written in Latin, so presumably Sarah was relatively fluent in that language. The copy was noteworthy because in the binding was a manuscript of a work on virginity by the Anglo-Saxon abbot Aldhelm.
