Dorothy was the daughter of James Richard Lang and Christine Fields Lang. She was educated in the Greene County School System. She grew up in the Ormondsville Community of Ayden, North Carolina. She relocated to Manhattan, New York early in life. After a brief period, she returned to Greene County, settling in Snow Hill, North Carolina. She was a Homemaker. She joined Community Fellowship Ministries in Farmville, North Carolina and served as Mother of the Church. She later joined Amazing Grace Church in Fountain, North Carolina.
She was married to Lorenza Suggs in 1973, they had 9 children. She was married to Curtis Barrett in 2001, they had 1 daughter. She was preceded in death by 1 Sister, Janet Lang Carr.

8 Daughters: Angela Lynn Suggs, Melinda Suggs, Stephanie Denise Randolph(Tony), April Demetris Smith(Aaron), Toria Nicole Suggs, Nikeya Keyana Suggs, Beyonka Latrice Suggs and Jessica Lynnette Barrett(Arianna).
2 Sons: Lorenza Suggs Jr and Lorenza "Man" Suggs III.
