Pattie P. Byrum
Pattie Elizabeth Perry Byrum, 84, died peacefully in her sleep, surrounded by family, at Obici Memorial Hospital, early on the morning of Jan. 14, 2000. Born in Chowan County, N.C., on Jan. 11, 1916 as the youngest daughter of the late John Henry and Tempie Ward Perry, she later moved to Suffolk, where she resided until her death.
With the death of her parents at a young age, she devoted herself to caring for her brothers as they worked the family farm and ventured to build lumbering and logging operations in Suffolk.
She was predeceased by all of her siblings, Cecil E. Haste, J. Henry Haste, Susie Perry Barnes, J. Starkie Perry, Joseph M. Perry, Fermer N. Perry, and Zachariah Perry.
After the death of her husband, James Lee Byrum in 1959, her mission and passion became caring for and providing spiritual guidance for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was surrounded by a large and loving family for her entire life.
Mrs. Byrum is survived by two daughters, Barbara B. Haverty and husband, James E. Haverty, Betty B. King and her husband, Louis G. King; two sons, James L. Byrum Jr. and Joseph T. Byrum and his wife, Jane C. Byrum. She lost her youngest son, Robert Perry Byrum, in 1998.
She had 12 grandchildren, Steven W. Byrum, Lisa H. Koolman, Teresa B. Thomas, Patricia H. Tully, Susan B. Mussel, White, Gregory T. Byrum, James E. Haverty Jr., Travis K. Byrum, Michael B. Haverty, Christopher L. King, Carla R. King, Courtney L. King; five step-grand-children, Beth K. Howell, Susan M. Blankenship, Mark W. Mitchell, Craig F. Mitchell and Christopher J. Mitchell. She was predeceased by one grandchild, Chadwick B. King, and one great-grandchild.
She also left behind 14 greatgrandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; 27 nieces and nephews; and several close friends.
She was a member of Liberty Spring Christian Church, the Ladies Bible Class, the Women's Fellowship, and The Family Circle.
A church service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Liberty Spring Christian Church by the Revs. Tommy Reynolds, Derek Koolman and Steven Byrum, Burial will be in the church cemetery.
