Kay Daun Pace Siler
July 8, 1938 - December 20, 2023 (age 85)

Kay P. Siler (nee Kay Daun Pace), beloved daughter, sister, cousin, wife, mother, aunt, and friend, passed away on December 20, 2023 from heart complications at the University of Utah hospital in Salt Lake City. Kay was born July 8, 1938, the oldest of four children of the late Anthon H. and Sylvia B. Pace of New Harmony, Utah. She was preceded in death by her baby brother Brian Anthon and her dear sister Joan.

Kay graduated from LDS Business College (1956), and then earned a B.S. (1962) and an M.A. (1964) from Utah State University, and a Ph.D from Cornell University (1969). Her academic career as a Professor took her first to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and then to Brigham Young University where she taught for 19 years. Among her various professional honors, she became the first woman ever appointed as a Department Chairman at BYU (outside the Home Economics Department).

She retired in 1993 and served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Birmingham, England. Upon her return she had a house built on the spot where her father's barn had been and where she had played as a child, so as to live out the remainder of her life among family and the friends she had loved longest. She was for many years an enthusiastic amateur genealogist, which led her to co-author a privately-published history of Harmony Valley.

Late in life she became reacquainted with Donald W. Siler of Ridgecrest, CA, whose beloved wife Lynnette had passed. Don and Kay had dated as teenagers. They were married in 2011 and enjoyed a wonderful decade together prior to Don's passing in 2021.

Kay is survived by her sister and lifelong friend Jean (Allen) Carter, her daughters Debbie, Michelle, Wendy, Janet, and Katy, and their spouses and children; by her late sister Joan's children Scott, Sandra, Steven, and Sherise, and their spouses and children; by Don's children Donna, Doug, Darla, and Dan, and their spouses and children; and by her son (with her first husband, Dr. James W. Edwards) and daughter-in-law Lance W. and Melody Z. Edwards, and their children Nathaniel Wesley and London Abigail Edwards.

Kay knew a full measure of this life's joys and its sorrows. Looking back over her life, she marveled that a rural farm girl from southern Utah would have the opportunity to experience so much of the variety of this remarkable world. Among her greatest joys were the deep friendships she was privileged to enjoy over the course of her life. She wished to express her appreciation to her friends and family for their many kindnesses to her, and to assure them of her enduring love.

May she rest in the peace of the Lord.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2023 at 11:00 am at the New Harmony LDS Ward Chapel (12 S Main St., New Harmony, UT) with a viewing from 9:30-10:30 prior to the service. Interment will be in the New Harmony Cemetery under the direction of Southern Utah Mortuary. www.mortuary.org.
