Elaine Maurer Young, 83, passed away Thursday, December 21, 2023, surrounded by her loving family.
Born May 8, 1940, in coal country, Elaine was raised in Mount Carmel, Pennsylvania by the late Jasper and Della Maurer.
She graduated from Mount Carmel High School in 1958 and later married the late John Franklin ("Jack") Young in 1960. Jack and Elaine moved from Riverside, NJ to Mechanicsburg, PA to Dubois, PA before settling in Towanda in 1970.
After her youngest child started Kindergarten, Elaine began work as an accounts manager at Agway in Wysox, where she worked until she retired in 1996.
Although petite in stature and reserved and quiet in nature, everyone around her knew Elaine served as the ultimate matriarch. What mom/grandma said, went, and for good reason. She was the picture of class and instilled values that will be omnipresent for generations to come.
Elaine enjoyed several hobbies and could be found spending her days reading, crafting, tending her flowers, or on shopping trips across the state with her daughters and granddaughters. She found pleasure in the occasional gin & tonic, loved to sit on the beach, and spent countless game nights taking everyone's money after a win in 'Phase 10' or 'Mexican Train Dominoes.'
Perhaps her favorite pastime was to spend time with and support her grandchildren and great grandchildren. From cheering from the stands at sporting events and chorus concerts, to sitting front row at weddings, to washing and bundling baby clothes, "Grandma" never failed to show up (and often save the day).
Blessed with her memory, surviving are her four children, Wendy (Jeff) Davidson, Kelly (Mark) Madden, Tracy (Kevin) Young, and John "Jack" (Pam) Young III, all of Towanda, PA; 11 grandchildren, Aaron (Bobby) Davidson, Elizabeth Davidson, Laura Davidson, Morgan (Alex) Madden, Taylor (Cole) Long, Amanda (Steven) Wanner, Abigail Welty, Gabriel (Katie) Welty, Austin Markel, Annie (Cameron) Young, and Alivia Young; six great grandchildren, Paige and Brayden Wilson; Lariah, Avery and Harlan Long; and Kendall Grace Sparbanie; her baby brother, Larry (Karen) Maurer, and her sister, Beverly Lerch.
Elaine was preceded in death by her parents, Della and Jasper Maurer; her late husband, Jack Young; and brothers and sister William, Jack, Ronnie, Cliff, Harry and Leona Maurer.
The family will hold calling hours Saturday, December 23rd, 2023, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Maryott Bowen Funeral Home 217 York Ave. Towanda, PA with a funeral service immediately following.
