Beverly Ann Smith passed away at age 86 on Friday, November 18 at her home in Holderness, NH surrounded by her loved ones. She was born on December 13, 1935 to Herman and Georgia Baker. Born 7th out of 10 Baker children became the beloved mother, aunt and sister who kept the extended family connected with regular reunions. She was sadly predeceased by all of her brothers and sisters. Her mother, Georgia passed away when Beverly was 14, leaving her with the care of the three youngest siblings. As things were done in those days, she became the household manager as a young teen age girl. As evidence by the love and respect felt by her family (immediate and extended), she was an iconic, wonderful, strong and resourceful woman with incredible intellect, pride, tenacity and a gift for bringing people together.
She had three prominent and successful careers, first as business partner to her husband, Norman P. Smith Jr who passed away at 90 in 2019. They owned and operated Norm's Gulf in Holderness NH from 1968 to 1988. The second was working in the Plymouth State University Admission Office for over a decade. In 2002, she and her daughter, Susan, purchased the Black Horse Motor Court in Holderness, NH which has since been changed to the Cottage Place on Squam Lake and operates as a family style lodging property. She was an excellent candlepin bowler winning state competitions in her prime. She also excelled at horseshoes, Cribbage, Scrabble, Words with Friends, Trivial Pursuit, Yatzee, baking and cooking, antique collecting and creating a very unique special home for her family. If you beat Bev at any game, you knew it was dumb luck! She is survived by her children, Barbara and her lifetime mate, John ; daughter Susan; son Scott and his wife Kimberly; grandchildren: Trevor; Nathalie; Mackenzie and Baker; great grandchildren Richard and Norman.
