Son of merchant Ebenezer Birrell and Mary (née Mitchell) Birrell.
Educated at Edinburgh University, Charles had begun his life with a business career but decided to join the church. He was educated at the Baptist's College in Stepney. He left on 1835, and became a Baptist Minister at the Pembroke Chapel in Liverpool.
