On August 5, 1947, a heartrending accident occurred in Dorchester, claiming the life of 9-year-old John Vieno. In a tragic turn of events, a hammock, newly placed in the Vieno family's backyard and secured by a tree trunk, became the site of the catastrophe. John and four other children, including his siblings, were eager to enjoy the hammock, but their collective excitement led to an unforeseen disaster. As they swung together, the weight proved too much for the tree trunk, which dislodged from the ground and fell, striking John and causing fatal injuries. Despite the swift actions of neighbors and Mrs. Mary Porter, who rushed him to the hospital, John succumbed to his injuries six hours later.
