There is a fabulous newer book (published in 2012) by Charles Wayne Garman, called "On the Far Side of the Sea," which clearly proves that Johann Jacob Kinzer/Kintzer (Küntzer) definitely was NOT the son of Jacob Küntzer and Catharina Seibert. AND... surprise...he definitely was NOT born in 1709 (as his gravestone is inscribed). Personally, I think it is this 1709 gravestone birthdate which may have led so many people down the wrong path when they assumed that year was correct since it was "set in stone," so to speak. The 1709 year has absolutely been proven to be an error though, by Mr. Garman, since he found Johann Jacob's original 1708 birth and baptismal record in Berghausen (Germany) Church records (see BIRTH YEAR, below, for a source). ALL of information, below, is my general summary of the research of Charles Wayne Garman, after reading his book, and is not data from my own personal research--so he deserves all the credit (and then some!). I only hope my summary does it justice...

The family's name is variously spelled Kintzer, Küntzer or Kinzer, among other ways.

Johann Jacob was born in Berghausen, (Baden-Durlach) which is now in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Mr. Garman's research says he is the son of Johann (Jacob?) Valentin Kintzer and Anna Appolonia (Unknown).

BIRTH YEAR: The birth year Johann's gravestone is incorrect. According to Berghausen Church records, including baptismal records, he was born 2 Feb 1708, and was baptized 6 Feb 1708. He was, therefore, not born in 1709 (as his gravestone is inscribed). His father's name is listed as "Jacob" in the baptismal record, and his mother's name as "Anna Appolonia." (Source: FHL INTL Film 123 8223, Evangelische Kirche Berghausen/ A. Durlach)

IMMIGRATION: While he originally lived in Berghausen, at the time he left Germany to come to the USA in 1737 he had been living with his wife and children in nearby Vorderweidenthal (Rhineland-Pfalz). Based on various records, most likely he was the Johnn Jacob Kintzer who sailed on the ship "St. Andrew Galley," along with many others from Vorderweidenthal.

MIX-UP: It should be pointed out that TWO Johann Jacob Kintzers came to the US in 1737, and should not be confused with each other. The 'other' one most likely sailed on the ship "Samuel." The 'other' one was born 25 January 1709 in Wolfersweiler, Saarland, Germany, and was most likely the son of Johann Bernard Küntzer and Anna Catharina Seibert. Mr. Garman's research information noted that many of those on the "Samuel" were from the Saar area, not Vorderweidenthal like those on the "St. Andrew Galley." For very specific information on how he came to his conclusions concerning who sailed on what ship, and who the parents were for each Johann Jacob Kintzer (including photocopies of church records), please see his book.

MARRIAGE: Johann Jacob Kintzer and Maria Margreta Kretscher were married on 18 November 1732 in Vorderweidenthal, Rhineland-Pfalz, Germany. On their marriage record, his father's name was listed as "the deceased Johann Valentin Kintzer." (Garman's Source: FHL INTLFilm 193201, Evangelische Kirche Vorderweidenthal/ BA Bergzabem). P.S. - My personal comment - Yes, I noticed that on his baptismal record the name for the father of Johann Jacob's is listed as "Jacob Kintzer." "Jacob" is pretty clear in the photocopy in the book, too. And, marriage records indexed on Ancestry, and listed in Mr. Garman's book, clearly state that his father is Johann Valentin. That anomaly is for others to explain, not me. I am not "up" on German name research.

CHILDREN of Johann Jacob and Maria Margreta (as listed by Mr. Garman):
1) Catharina Elisabetha (1733-1811) who married Johann Leonard German.

2) Johann Heinrich I (born 1736, died bet. 1736-1746)

3) Johann Jacob (1738-1818) who married Elisabeth Lang

4) Anna Ursula (born 1739) who married Bernard Wolf

5) Valentin (1740-1828) who married Barbara Sharp

6) Johann Georg (born 1742) who married Charlotta Miller

7) Johannes 91744-1823) who married Magdalena Unknown

8) Johann Heinrich II (born 1746) who married 1st Margretha Müller, 2nd Elisabeth Brua and 3rd Magdalena Henech

9) Conrad (1749-c1771)

10) Johann Michael (1751-1808) who married Magdalena Diller

OCCUPATION: According to Mr. Garman, both Johann Jacob Kintzer's marriage record and also the Lancaster County, Pennsylvania tax records say that he was a weaver. On his daughter Catharina Elisabetha's birth record, Mr. Garman says it lists her fatheer, Johann Jacob Kintzer, as a master weaver from Vorderweidenthal. (Garman's source: FHL INTL Film 193201, Evangelische Kirche Vorderweindenthal/ BA Bergzabem)

BURIAL MONTH: Burial records were not found by Mr. Garman, but some people put the month of his death as January. However, the month as seen on his gravestone ("Junius") some translate as June.

HEADSTONE TRANSLATION from the book "On the Far Side of the Sea" (page 136): "Jacob Kinzer was born in Badenderlach (Baden-Durlach) on 2nd of February in 1709 and died the 26 June 1783."
