Mrs. Bettie Dunn Dies at age of Nearly 91 Years
Aged Resident of County Passes to Reward--Family was Prominent
Lincoln county lost one of her oldest and most revered women when death claimed Mrs. Bettie Price Dunn, widow of Samuel Dunn, at her home of many years on a main highway a few miles south of town Saturday afternoon, following a comparatively brief illness.
Mrs. Dunn was born December 20, 1847, to one of the large land owning families of the county. Her father's land included the tract later embraced in the Whitworth College campus. The name of Price is commemorated by the many references to the "Price Estate" in land records.
It was May 11, 1868, that Miss Bettie Price was united in marriage with Samuel Dunn, a Confederate veteran, a member of a representative family line, who died about 20 years ago.
They occupied one of the interesting old homes of Lincoln County, a great part of which was constructed without nails, wooden pegs holding the timbers in place, and the dining room and kitchen being to the rear of the home separate from the main building for safety from fire. After it sustained extensive damage in a storm in which Mrs. Dunn was injured a few years ago, the home was remodelled into compact form.
Six sons and three daughters blessed the union of Mr. and Mrs. Dunn, of whom, six survive. They are Messrs. S.J., B.F., R.J., and J.W; MMes. Mrs. J.P. Stanmps and Mrs L. P. Reed. Mrs. Dunn also reared from infancy, a granddaughter, Mrs. Sam Carter of Natalbany, La. Surviving grandchildren number 29 and surviving great grandchildren 24. Representing the latest generation of Mrs. Dunn's descendants is the infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul White of Wesson whom Mrs. Dunn had the pleasure of seeing recently.
The high principles, attractive personality, kindly traits of character and interesting conversation of Mrs. Dunn made her beloved and admired. Her Christian faith was unwavering, and her bright intellect undimmed by age and illness.
The funeral of this noble Christian woman took place at 3 p.m., Sunday at her home, Rev. J. Denman Griffin officiating. Hymns Mrs. Dunn had loved were sung.
Interment was made in the Dunn family cemetery beside a the tomb of Mrs. Dunn's husband. A large attendance and lovely flowers expressed sorrow at Mrs. Dunn's passing and sympathy for the bereaved sons, daughters and other relatives in their loss.
Pallbearers were eight grandsons of Mrs. Dunn, as follows: Messrs. Richard, Grady, Grover, Bob Joe and Freddie Dunn, and Robert Earl Reed, L.P.Reed, Jr and Clarence Reed.
