Peruvian military, he was Commander of the Northern Army, victor of the Battle of Zarumilla. After the victory over Ecuadorian troops in 1941 was promoted to Major General. He introduced himself as candidate for president in the elections of June 10, 1945, being defeated by José Luis Bustamante y Rivero. The Peruvian government honored him by giving the 18 January 1946 the title of Grand Marshal of Peru and until today he was the last Marshal appointed, and is considered national hero.
