Mary was a longtime resident of Montgomery, Ala., where she touched many lives while serving as a nurse with the Montgomery County Health Department and the Alabama Department of Public Health.
Mary earned her nursing degree from St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing in Rochester, N.Y. She married Gerard E. Hasselwander in 1950 and worked as a nurse for various hospitals in New England, Upstate New York and Maryland.
After moving to Montgomery with her family in 1962, she worked at St. Jude. Hospital and Baptist Hospital before joining the county health department. There she ultimately became chief nurse. She retired in 1990 after serving as an outreach coordinator for the state health department.
She spent much of her retirement living at StillWaters Resort in Dadeville, Ala., on Lake Martin, and traveling with her husband to Europe and historical sites across the United States. She moved to Troy in 2020.
Mary was born in Rochester, N.Y., on Nov 24,1928, to Leo J. and Mabel E. McGahan.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her first son, Gerard B. Hasselwander (Eileen). She is survived by her second son, John E. Hasselwander (Mary) of Troy, granddaughters, Mary Lambson (Steve) of Roanoke, Texas, Kathy H. Gray (William) of Scranton, Pa., four great-grandchildren, Ivey and Levitt Lambson, and Gideon and Vivian Gray.
A private family service will be held in Montgomery.
