From Schaetter Funeral Home:

Milburn "Al" Muirhead of Fredericksburg was born on July 8, 1931 at home on the farm in Ennis, Texas to Milburn Green and Mildred Holland Muirhead. He was the second oldest of four children, all of whom predeceased him.

Al spent his early days on the farm in Ennis, Texas. Later his father was a music minister in the Baptist Church, leading the family to relocate regularly. They lived in Houston, where Al worked at age 12 stocking shelves in a grocery store. They lived in Waxahachie, where the family had a cow (Al's job was to stake the cow in different places where the grass was best). They lived in Waco, then finally in the Dallas area, where Al graduated from high school at age 16. His homeroom teacher referred him for a job to the cashier at the First National Bank. By mistake he went into Republic National Bank, where he was hired anyway. He worked at Republic for 42 years, earning the distinction of being the youngest employee ever to be promoted to vice president. During his tenure at the bank he played on the bank bowling team and sang in the bank quartet. More importantly he taught many young bankers through the American Institute of Banking and received a graduate degree from the Southwestern Graduate School of Banking.

Along the way Al served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He married and had two daughters, Ann and Amy. He received a bachelor's degree from SMU, no small feat while working full time at the bank and having a young family.

Al and Nancy married in 1984, moving to Fredericksburg in 1991 after Al retired. Al had spent may happy hunting seasons in the Hill Country, which lured him back for retirement.

For the last 25 years Al and Nancy have been members of Bethany Lutheran Church where he served on the Property Management Committee, was an integral part of the Christmas Journey (the church's living nativity) and sang in the church choir for all 25 years. Al loved music of every kind!

Al was an old school gentleman who treated everyone with kindness, respect and generosity. Despite many serious health issues he loved life enough to snap back time and time again, earning him the nickname among his friends and family as the Energizer Bunny. His final illness of COVID, RSV and congestive heart failure proved too steep a hill to climb.

Al is survived by his wife, Nancy O'Neal, daughters Ann Muirhead and Amy Penland, stepson Chris Hearn and his wife, Wendy Hearn, 2 grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren.

Along with his parents Al was preceded in death by 3 siblings: Adele Lewis, Ed Muirhead and Conrad Muirhead.

We will miss Al with all our hearts. Please lift him up in prayer. Fly high with the Angels, Al. You wear your wings well.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, December 18th at 11:00 a.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church with Rev. Kevin Haug and Rev. Casey Zesch officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Wounded Warriors, www.woundedwarriorprject.org; Tunnels to Towers, www.T2T.org or a charity of your choice.

Entombment of Cremains will be held at a later date in the St. Barnabas Columbarium.
