Emily Spangler was born in VA, and her parents settled in this county in 1824. Her husband was Caleb Bales who died in 1836. He had been a soldier in the War of 1812, and participated in the Battle of New Orleans. To them were born 5 children - William F., Catherine (deceased), Josephine (deceased), Mrs. Martha Carson, and Caleb Bales. For many years Grandma Bales has made her home with her younger son. She was 86 years, 3 months, and 5 days.
