Caroline fought two battles with cancer. She beat breast cancer and was fighting lymphoma. She had been in remission from lymphoma for over a year. Then, complications of an aggressive form of lung cancer which appeared suddenly contributed to her passing.
Caroline was born at home in rural Mechanicsville, Iowa on April 09, 1943, the daughter of Vernon and Lois Comer. She was the second of six children. While growing up in Stanwood Iowa, she had a paper route delivering the Cedar Rapids Gazette. She enjoyed interacting with her customers and appreciated the kindness they extended to her. She was part of the last graduating class of Stanwood Consolidated School in 1961.
She worked in the Linn County Clerk of Courts office for 33 years. During that time, she worked in several areas of the clerk's office. During her last 10 years, she headed up the Small Claims area. She took a lot of pride and satisfaction seeing that orders were properly completed and correct. She attended "Law Day" where judges and attorneys met to discuss various topics of interest to the attorneys and the court. While she was not an attorney, Caroline was asked to provide insight into the Small Claims processes to better facilitate the handling of those cases. When Caroline retired after 33 years, her name was put forward by the Chief Judge recognizing her contribution to the court.
As a member of the Cloverleaf Squares, Caroline was an avid square and round dancer for many years. She assisted with lessons, served as a club officer, and helped the local square dance community in many ways.
Caroline is survived by her husband Leo Bertling; her three children Ronald (Julia) Ohrt, Daniel (Carrie) Ohrt, and Julie (Joshua); 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; siblings Darlene Block, LaSonda (Freddy) Sipe-Moreno, Bill (Ann) Comer, Barb (Loren) Reece, and Patricia Schroeder.
She was preceded in death by her parents Vernon LeRoy and Lois Jane Comer.
Caroline had a soft spot for dogs over the years. Some of her favorites were Andy and her dachshunds Toby, Timmy, Tazer, and her current beloved Troy.
