Actor and Boxer. He was best known to both television and film viewers for the numerous roles he had during a career that spanned six decades. Born Charles Patrick Ryan O'Neal, he started in boxing before moving on to acting. He made his acting debut in 1960 on an episode of the series "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis." He would go on to appear in many television series during his career such as "Bachelor Father," "Empire," "Peyton Place," "Good Sports," "Bull" and "Bones." In 1969, he made his film debut in "The Big Bounce." He went on to appear in such films as "Love Story," "Wild Rovers," "What's Up, Doc?," "Paper Moon," "Barry Lyndon," "Nickelodeon," "A Bridge Too Far," "The Driver," "The Main Event" and "Chances Are." He earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor in 1971 for his role in "Love Story." Two of his children, daughter Tatum and son Griffin, shared the acting profession with their father and another son, Patrick, went into broadcasting. For his contributions to motion pictures, he has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, located at 7057 Hollywood Blvd. He also had a child named Redmond with Farrah Fawcett though they never married. Ryan was also married to actress Lee Taylor Young with whom he had son Patrick.
