Anne Barton Mitchell
May 10, 1931 - December 5, 2023

"Our mother was a strong woman, who would see us through every difficulty."
It is no small thing to beat COVID-19 and pneumonia simultaneously when you're 89 1/2 years old. But our mother did it with her 92-year-old husband in tow. That they were both blessed to beat Covid is no small thing. And in turn, we were blessed with a few extra years with her. We will ever be grateful for that, even as we say goodbye for now, loving and remembering her as our cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother, aunt, sister, cousin, and friend. After spending the day and evening with loved ones, Anne Barton Mitchell peacefully passed away in her sleep on December 5, 2023, at Legacy House, Spanish Fork, Utah. She will be laid to rest in her beloved Monticello, Utah.
Anne was born May 10,1931, in Moroni, Utah, to Lloyd and Willamelia Frost Barton, while her dad was working road construction. Shortly after her birth, the project was finished and the little family returned home to Monticello, where Anne grew up surrounded by grandparents, great grandparents, and a dozen or more aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was the first grandchild on her mother's side of the family and the first granddaughter on her dad's side.
While Anne was growing up, she was expected to, learned to, and did work, developing an admirable work ethic in the process.
She was creative, an avid reader and book collector, strong-willed, driven, a "giver" from the get-go, and highly competitive to the very end.
She liked school, was popular, actively involved in extracurricular activities and a good student. Anne met, dated, and married Gene Porter while she was in high school. Married to Gene, they spent their time, hard work, and creative energy raising and providing for their family, serving in the Church and their communities, while always working to improve themselves and their situation.
To this union were born six children: Alan, Cynthia, DeeAnne, Scott, Sanford, and Matthew.
Anne met the challenges and changes in her life with a fierce determination to not only survive but thrive, and to keep her family close to her and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints of which she was a lifelong devout and contributing member. She often said, "I did the very best I knew how to do at that stage of my life." And she did.
Anne met her eternal companion, Ralph Mitchell, when her sister, April, and April's friend, Candace, introduced them.
Married to Ralph, Anne spent her time, hard work, and creative energy in unison with him involved in Church service, travel, and supporting their families. They served at least five church missions, including a mission to England. Wherever they lived, they always served, reached out to family, traveled, and entertained, their open-door hospitality was always and forever dependably warm and welcoming.
Anne held many jobs over her lifetime, beginning at 8 years old, when she helped at the flour mill. She was a quick learner and demanded excellence of herself. In every job she ever held, she earned the respect of her peers and supervisors alike. Most enjoyable were the years she and Gene spent as owners/operators of Blue Mountain Guest Ranch; the years she worked as Executive Director of San Juan County Travel Council; and her years as owner/operator of her health food store, Krazy Lady's Kitchen.
And then there were her "projects," (which became "little projects" for grandchildren and great grandchildren as she aged - and they loved them and her). Anne was a woman in motion and a firm believer in the adage, "Creative chaos is better than tidy idleness," unless, that is, as the voracious reader and collector she was, she was lost in a good book.
She was a life-long learner, both formal and informal, whose thirst for knowledge could never be fully satisfied and whose love, testimony, and example of service and excellence will ever stand as a benchmark for her family and all who loved her.
Anne is survived by her children: Alan (Patti) Porter, Blanding, UT and Mesa, AZ; Cynthia (Gary), Glendale, AZ; DeeAnne Christopherson, Spanish Fork, UT; Scott (Garla), Mesa, AZ; Sanford (Deanna), Hurricane, UT; Matthew (Lenay), Spanish Fork, UT. 38 grandchildren, 109 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great-grandchildren, with 4 on the way. Her siblings, Helen (Bill), April (Sam), Edson (Ann), many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends near and far. Also especially dear to Anne is her English "daughter," Maria. Equally treasured by Anne are Ralph's children, Cheryl Smith (Bill), Michelle, and Shauna Clark, Claudia Bowles (Bruce), Ralph Jr., grandchildren and great grandchildren. She has written, "I want Ralph's children to know I love them."
Anne was preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd and Willie Barton, siblings, Larry, Silas, Nancy, Robert, W. Alford, Stanley, Allan Jay and daughter-in-law, Arlie Peterson Porter.
Our hearts go out in gratitude to all who have loved and supported Anne throughout her life in every kind word, thought, or deed, whether she was there or not. Our hearts go out in gratitude to those who've stepped up even more in recent years and been there for her following her journey through COVID-19, pneumonia, and a broken hip as she grew weaker and her short-term memory began to waver and betray her.
Our mom, grandma, great grandma, and great-great grandma has loved us, and we love her. To her family - and to all who loved her - blessed be the name, life, and memory of Anne Barton Mitchell.
