Daniel J. Simon Sr.
April 23, 1927 ~ December 2, 2023 (age 96)

Daniel Joseph Simon, 96 of Bay Shore, Michigan passed away peacefully on December 2 after a short illness, holding on long enough for his beloved granddaughter Gretchen to arrive from California. He lived a good life.

Dan was born on April 23, 1927 in Ionia, Michigan, the middle child of seven of Alfred and Cunigunda (Daniels) Simon. From an early age Dan always had a twinkle in his eye and a smile on his face that lasted through his entire life. Dan loved his siblings and was the last of his generation. His family moved to the Petoskey area and Dan grew up on the family farm, plowing fields with the horse team. He was a proud alumni of the Wah-Me-me one-room schoolhouse and St. Francis school. Dan was known as a hard and responsible worker his entire life. On February 14, 1953, Dan married the first love of his life, Mary Spiegl and made their home in Bay Shore. Dan and Mary raised eight children: Christine (John) Knight, Leo (Jill) Simon, Daniel Jr (Beth) Simon, Gary Simon, Janet (Jim Harrison) Simon, Robert (Kathy) Simon, Kevin (Jo) Simon and Carole (Doug) Melvin. Dan and Mary enjoyed 33 years together until Mary's death in 1986. On July 25, 1992 Dan married the second love of his life Evelyn Angevine and continued to make his home in Bay Shore. Dan should receive some medals for two marriages over thirty years.

Dan was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving mostly in West Germany from 1950-1952, protecting the borders during the cold war. Dan was a loyal and devout member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic church in Petoskey and St. Francis Solanus church in Bay Shore. He also was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus, a lifetime member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the VFW, the gang that solved the world's problems at KMart then Burger King, and a lifetime member of the great story-tellers group. Dan also served as the neighborhood veterinarian, optometrist, urgent care technician, barber and mechanic. Dan loved tending his garden that helped feed his eight kids plus various nieces, nephews and neighbors that called his house their home.

Dan was preceded by his first wife Mary, his son Bob, daughter-in-law Jill and grandson Simon Ernst. Dan loved his grandchildren Gretchen (Dave) Baisa, Anne (Jeff Hughes) Knight, Carolyn Knight, Lindsey (Chester) Simon, Kalie Simon, Alison (Linda Gossett) Simon, Evan (Lauren) Simon, Tara Simon, Blake (Melissa) Enbody, Simon Ernst, Billy (Maddy) Harrison, Jason Simon, Ashley (Thomas) Simon, Matthew Simon, Jessica Simon, Hannah Simon, Rebekah Simon, Lauren (Chris) Ritter, Kristen Murdock, Aaron Murdock, Justin Murdock, Trenton Murdock and Wyatt Melvin. Dan was also blessed with twelve great grandchildren and was Uncle Dan to more than we can count. The family is thankful for the support of so many friends and family, but wishes to give a special thanks to Barb Simon for her tireless support especially over these last few years, and a special thanks to Hospice of Michigan for Dan's end of life care.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be directed to the VFW Emmet County Post 2051.

The family will be celebrating Dan's life with a funeral mass on Tuesday, December 5 at 10:30 AM at St. Francis Church in Petoskey. Visitation will be one hour prior at 9:30 AM Tuesday. The Rev. Greg McCallum of St. Francis Xavier church will officiate. A celebratory lunch in Dan's honor will be held after funeral services at the Knights of Columbus. Burial arrangements with full military honors will be scheduled in the spring.
