Eldon G. Bailey

Beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather Eldon Gerald Bailey passed away on December 2, 2023 at the age of 86. He was born to Lawrence Gerald Bailey and Mary Jane (Lovejoy) Bailey in New Harmony, Indiana on January 21, 1937. He had four younger brothers-Jackson, Donald, Richard and Robert. Eldon graduated from George Washington High School in Indianapolis on June 9th, 1955, lettering in both football and baseball. He was drafted by the Cleveland Indians after high school but chose to join the Navy instead. He was a Recruit Platoon Leader, Petty Officer First Class, serving for 6 years and honorably discharged on April 11, 1963. Upon returning home, Eldon enrolled in International Barber School. He was a barber for almost 60 years, most of which were at Bailey's Barber Shop in Mars Hill. He married Nancy Lynn Clanton on July 17, 1959. They had two daughters, Debra Lynn Bailey and Bonnita Kay Bailey. Eldon was a baptized believer and an active member of Ben Davis Christian Church in Indianapolis for 56 years, serving as an usher, greeter and third grade Sunday school teacher for most of those years. All of his students were taught the plan of salvation and could recite the books of the Bible by the time they left his class. He was affectionately known as "the Cookie Man" because he passed out cookies to all of the classes of children each Sunday. Eldon has been a member of Faith Baptist Church in Danville for the past 2 years. His love for the Lord was evident in every aspect of his life, from playing Christian radio stations in his barber shop to leaving Bible tracts in restaurants. He was gentle yet strong, always gracious, kind and loving. Eldon was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald Bailey and Mary Jane Bailey; his brothers Richard Bailey, Jackson Bailey and Robert Bailey. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years Nancy Bailey; his brother Donald Bailey; his daughters Debra Summers (Larry) and Bonnita Sneed (Barry); his grandchildren Amber Roth (Nathan), Brandon Bourne (Allison), Nathan Sneed (Amanda), Michael Sneed, Joshua Sneed (Chloe); and his great-grandchildren Hope Roth, Kendall Bourne, Rebecca Roth, Eldon Bourne and Esther Sneed.
