Lillian Bates, 78, a lifelong resident of Mayhill, passed away Thursday, April 17, 2008, in Lubbock, Texas.
Mrs. Bates was born Feb. 22, 1930, in Mayhill to Doyle Verble and Annie (Gililland) Scott. After graduating from the Hope High School, she drove the school bus from the mountains to Artesia for many years. She then worked in the post offices in Mayhill and Cloudcroft for more than 30 years and retired in 2000. She was a member of the Mayhill Church of Christ and a former board member of the Sacramento Mountains Historical Society.
Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Jesse Bates, of the family home; a son, Jim Bates, and his wife, Karen, of Grants; two daughters, Debbie Bates, of Amarillo, and Donna Nicholson and her husband, Eddie, of Brownfield, Texas; seven grandchildren, Jared Bates and his wife Jeanne, of Tulsa, Okla., Randall Bates and his wife, Lena, of Las Cruces, Tiffany Murray and her husband, Brian, of Abilene, Texas, Kenneth Gunter and his wife, Shelley, of Nolan, Texas, Lindsey and her husband, Ryan, of Buda, Texas, Jeremy Nicholson and his wife, Charla, of Lubbock, and Deanna Kennedy and her husband, Clinton, of Houston; four great-grandchildren, Ian Bates and, Conagher Bates, of Tulsa, and Nathan and Noah Nicholson of Lubbock; and a sister, Julia Dockray, of Alamogordo.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a grandson, Toby Nicholson.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 10 a.m. at the Mayhill Church of Christ with Eddy Coleman officiating.
Interment will follow in the Mountain Acres Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Mrs. Bates' grandchildren and their spouses.
