Robert Edward Fowler, who dispensed kindness and quiet humor alongside prescriptions from his family's drug store in Memphis, TX, died on Nov. 15, 2023, in Lubbock, TX, following a brief illness. He was 94.

Known as Bob to his friends, and "Grandaddy" and "Boppa" to his grandchildren and great grandchildren, he joined his father, John, and his older brother, Dick, at Fowler Rexall Drug, where he worked until retiring in 2008.

He was born on Nov. 16, 1928, in Happy, Texas, the second child of John Arthur Fowler and Ruth (Garrett) Fowler. He attended high school in Petersburg and graduated in 1946. Following his junior year at Texas Tech University, he joined the U.S. Navy, where he served as a radio technician from 1950 to 1954. He returned to Tech to complete his degree and graduated in 1955.

At a Valentine's Day party in February 1955, he met Sue Manton, who had moved to Lubbock from Dallas to teach school. They married later that year in August and moved to Weatherford, OK, where Bob attended pharmacy school. After graduating in 1958, Bob and Sue moved to Memphis to work in the family business. His dedication often saw him filling an emergency prescription after the store had closed for the day. Even in retirement, he continued to fill in for other vacationing pharmacists in the Panhandle area.

Bob and Sue had three daughters and were married until Sue's death in 2013, just short of their 58th anniversary. Bob moved to Spur in 2022, to be closer to family.

He planted pecan trees surrounding their home on South 6th Street, and harvested the crop each year. He also grew tulips in retirement, estimating that during the peak of those years he had between 1,500 and 2,000 flowers blooming each spring. He loved working with wood and built model ships and tables, as well as four grandfather clocks.

To support local wildlife, he built an owl house and a bat house in his backyard. He loved astronomy and star gazing, and avidly followed the space telescopes launched by NASA. Playing chess also was a passion, and he played with visiting family or on his computer.

He was a member in several civic organizations, including the Rotary Club, the City Economic Board, the Methodist Church, and Memphis Cyclones Football Boosters.

Bob is survived by his three daughters, Sara Friedman and husband, Brian, of Fairfield, CT, Peggy Hindman and husband, Doug, of Spur, and Beth Green and husband, David, of Arlington; by seven grandchildren, Ashlee Hosch and husband Mike, of Forney, Shea Beseda and husband Brandon, of Katy, Christian Green and wife Caroline, of Dallas, Sam Friedman of Brooklyn, NY, Maggie Friedman of Los Angeles, CA, Chad Meeks and wife Lindsey, of San Angelo, and Colby Meeks and wife, Kaylie, of Houston; by two step-grandchildren, Matt Hindman and wife Leslee of Spur, and Macy Kittley and husband Will, of Henrietta; and by four great-grandchildren and four step great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 9th at 2:00 PM at the Methodist Church in Memphis, TX. There will be no formal visitation. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Methodist Church in Memphis.
