John Melvin Brockway, son of Arthur and Sylvia (Black) Brockway, was born Oct. 29, 1912, in Salt Creek Township, Mitchell County, Kan., and died Thursday, June 6, 1989, at the Baptist Central Hospital, Memphis, Tenn. He attended country school district No. 69, known as the Wear School, and graduated from Barnard High School in 1932. He taught one year at school district No. 105.
On July 15, 1934, he was married at Eldon, Mo., to Fay Irene Jesse, daughter of B.F. and Bertha Jesse. They lived many years in Missouri, where he was foreman with Airtherm Products in the St. Louis area for 22 years. He was then transferred to the Forrest City, Ark., plant where he had since lived. He retired in 1977.
Melvin was a friendly, outgoing person who never knew a stranger and was always willing to lend a hand to someone in need. He was an active member of the good Hope Baptist Church at Forrest City. He was preceded in death by his parents; son David; and brother Delbert Brockway.
He is survived by his wife, Fay, of the home; grandson Dustin of Benton, Ark.; two sisters, Mrs. Vernon (Beulah) VanLeewen, Fairfield, Neb., and Mrs. Kenneth (Ada) Thiel, Beloit, and a sister-in-law, Ruth Brockway, also of Beloit; several nieces, nephews and a host of cousins and friends.
Services were held Friday, June 9, at the Good Hope Baptist Church at Forrest City with the Rev. John D. Webb officiating, and June 10 at Phillips Funeral Chapel in Eldon, Mo. Burial was in the Dooley Cemetery in Eldon.
